Shanghai

I lived in Shanghai, Chinai from September, 1999 thru September, 2020. Witnessing the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in China. I lived through the first lockdown of Shanghai and used that time as an opportunity to explore and document the empty streets of the Old City. As China successfully began to reopen the country I witnessed and documented the city coming back to life. Once again I was able to visit the cities attractions, gardens and museums. My photo walks became the inspiration of this body of work of paintings and drawings of architecture, gardens and old lane neighborhoods of Shanghai.  The following paintings and drawing are some of the old lane neighborhoods that were scheduled for the wrecking ball. Most of if not all of these places no longer exist.
